Marketing agencies around the UK provide a wide range of advertising and promotional services to help UK businesses to gain media exposure and drive lead generation programs. However according to a survey of UK businesses, 76% of UK businesses are unsatisfied with their marketing campaigns (either due to results not meeting their expectations, or campaigns being unsuccessful). Of the 1500 UK companies surveyed, many businesses feel that they are not getting the best results from their marketing campaigns. The highest proportion of unsatisfied businesses on the survey (42%) were companies spending over £2 million a year on advertising and promotion. Anne Richards (who works with Marketing Quotes) commented 'larger companies that are spending more do not feel they are getting the best returns on their marketing spend. The larger businesses mainly use TV advertising, sponsorship and direct marketing campaigns; feedback is that the sales are either decreasing or staying level (rather...

Understandably the chief concerns about cloud computing providers have thus far been concentrated toward “security, service reliability, vendor lock-in and lack of a clear business case”, notes Linda Tucci, news director at CIO Matters.  At the moment, whether cloud computing is environmentally friendly is not of much concern at all. However a study commissioned by the Carbon Disclosure Project, found that by moving to Cloud Based Computing, companies can dramatically reduce their carbon footprint. Their results show that by 2020, by spending 69% of their infrastructure, platform and software budgets on cloud services, U.S. companies with revenue of $1 billion or more would reap energy savings of $12.3 billion and carbon reductions equivalent to 200 million barrels of oil – enough to power 5.7 million cars for one year. Migrating just one HR application to the public cloud could save one of these companies $12 million over five years and cut CO2...

At Berlin Web Studio we do more than design gorgeous and effective websites, we also help people get their sites noticed by customers and by Google. Getting noticed by Google is something you really want for you site; but in a good way.  You don't want Google removing you from its page rankings because you've broken one of their ever-changing rules! Google has certain algorithms, or rules it uses to decide what pages and what sites can be ranked and what cannot.  They tend to have cute names like Panda or Penguin, but if you are on the wrong side of these rules, it can have devastating effects on the effectiveness of your website; such as dropping you from a page one Google Search result to no result at all! Things that worked really well in the past: keyword stuffing, anchor links etc, are now seriously frowned upon by Google. ...

Antivirus company Thirtyseven4, LLC cautions today of the increased dangers and risks associated with tomorrow's release of "The Dark Knight Rises." The final chapter of director Christopher Nolan's Batman Trilogy is already attracting millions of search engine queries worldwide and its popularity opens the door for cybercriminals to attack anxious fans hoping to get a sneak peek before the film's official release Friday at midnight.  Thirtyseven4 advises extreme caution when searching for more information on the film and says it is best to steer clear of sites touting leaked footage or pirated downloads of "The Dark Knight Rises." "The exploitation of highly anticipated blockbuster films for malware propagation is nothing new, especially with Drive-by style attacks. We've seen it with the Harry Potter films and even more recently with The Hunger Games," said Steven Sundermeier, Owner of Thirtyseven4. "Search terms like 'Christopher Nolan,' 'Christian Bale / Batman,'  'Anne Hathaway / Catwoman' and 'The Dark...

This has certainly been an interesting week for those of us involved in any form, with IT and IT security.  Malware attacks are on the increase, they are now also targeting Macs and an astonishing 51% of IT administrators admitted in a survey that they couldn't guarantee that the computers they administer are malware free! Malware Hiding in Big Brands I guess one of the reasons the IT administrators are being so cautious is that according to a recent report by Commtouch, a leading provider of cloud-based solutions for security companies and service providers in America, its security analysts have seen substantial continued blending of big brand names with malware.   In its July 2012 Commtouch Internet Trends Report, researchers named the following top seven brands that were abused in various third-party email attacks: ·         Amazon – Order confirmation emails that didn't describe the order, but only the balance ·         AT&T...

This won't be too surprising to many of you out there; Windows 8 is a great piece of software.  It is a uniquely designed operating system that has totally re-thought how operating systems can work and should work.  It offers better power management, easier updates, easier recovery and with its Live ID, access to your desktop, your home page and your apps from any computer. The problem is, Windows 8 has been designed for touch screens and at the moment, not many of us have touch screens.  Microsoft believes that in the near future, we'll all be using touch screens and that the keyboard will go the way of the floppy disk.  But at the moment, most business users and most home users of Windows operating systems still cling to our old fashioned keyboards. Of course, Windows has taken steps to rectify this by launching its own touch screen tablet,...

We regularly use Google Analytics to analyse websites, but were you aware that Google analyses itself continuously too?  Well, it does.  And one of the things it analyses is requests from people and governments asking it to remove results from its search engines. Google started a Transparency Report two years ago which shows the number and type of requests it receives from governments around the world asking it to remove information from the web. The report also shows traffic patterns to Google and requests sent by copyright holders to have search results removed from the search engine.  These sections are updated in real time, but due to the manual process involved in the government requests, this section is only updated every six months. Today  they have released the data showing requests from governments around the world from July to December 2011, asking Google to remove blog posts, videos or to...

If you have an account with LinkedIn, change your password at once!   The social networking site has announced that over 6.5 million passwords have been hacked and released onto the internet.  What is worse is that the emails associated with the passwords have also been  hacked.   LinkedIn says that the passwords are encrypted and won't be readable - but we wouldn't want to take that risk.  In fact, Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant at Sophos blogged that "Although the data which has been released so far does not include associated email addresses, it is reasonable to assume that such information may be in the hands of the criminals." How did it Happen A Russian hacker acquired password hashes and used these to hack into the accounts.  Now these account holders are wide open to account hijacking and data theft.   Yet LinkedIn has not made its own announcement...
